Alban Lakata injured skiing
Mountain Bike Marathon European Champion, and all round legend Alban Lakata of the Topeak Ergon Racing Team was recently injured while skiing and will postpone his start to the season.
Ski Touring for Alban Lakata in the off season is not only a welcomed change following a long year on the bike, it is also a good type of cross training during the winter months. However, it is this, his second greatest passion after mountain biking, which is responsible for the 34 year old Austrian’s latest setback. ”Just before the end of the year, I lost a ski on a descent,” he explained, ”I crashed taking a tumble, and unfortunately over extended my Achilles tendon causing it to snap.” He also sustained other injuries, however none as serious. Wasting no time, Lakata went to a private specialist in Innsbruck, and was operated on the same day. The operation took 30 minutes and passed without problems.
”At the moment I actually feel okay. The pain subsides a bit every day”, Alban said. However training must be put on hold for the time being. ”I will start again on the home trainer in four to five weeks, but then it will be a careful build process, aiming for the Riva Bike Marathon at the beginning of May. It is then I will make a postponed start to my season.”
What’s clear is that a season following such an injury will be different from one without the complication. The racer however is not ready to write off the entire year. ”I have a clear target of the World Championships at the end of June in South Africa. My other target this year was also in South Africa — The Cape Epic — but that is in March so I have to let that one go — I will watch it on the Computer though.”
This means he will be supporting his team mates Robert Mennen (28) and Kristian Hynek (33) who plan to race as a team. It is the same team with Mennen (German Marathon Champion) and our new addition, Krisitan, which will tackle the Andalucia Bike Race between the 23rd and 28th February 2014 in Cordoba, Spain.
So, to Albanator, we wish a speedy recovery!
